BACKGROUND:
jade harley grew up on a remote island far off in the pacific with her grandfather - hass "the flame" harley - who died a few years after she was born and left her to be raised by her best friend and pet dog, becquerel (1). they live together next to an active volcano, inside of a giant tower filled to the brim with high-tech gadgetry and other electronics. due to her isolation from the rest of the world, she lacks general understanding of pop culture and normal human behavior.
as she got older, she was introduced to john egbert, rose lalonde, and dave strider, whom she met through the internet, and in the months leading up to her thirteenth birthday she receives a copy of the infamous SBURB beta (2) from a lotus time capsule inside a frog-shaped temple near her tower. she initiates into the game playing as dave's server. narcoleptic problems nearly stop her from getting dave safely into the medium, but she does get him there, and just in the nick of time too.
since before she could remember, jade has had problems with her sleep patterns to the point where she clearly suffers from narcolepsy, and spends most of her time asleep and 'awake' upon prospit (3), waiting there for john egbert to finally stop 'sleeping' so that he might join her and be able to talk with her. while upon prospit, jack noir (4) attacks prospit, and severs its moon by slicing its chain in half. the moon falls towards skaia (5), and john falls out of his tower while still asleep.
when jade hastens to save him, she fails to wake him up, and resorts to pushing him out of the way of the oncoming collision. prospit's moon collides with skaia with jade still in the way, and her dreamself is killed (6). the impact causes her dreambot (7) to explode also, and jade is thrown off the top of her tower.
luckily becquerel catches her and places her back in her bed, where she immediately falls asleep once more. however, without a dreamself she is unable to awake upon prospit and instead heads directly to the furthest ring (8) without passing go or collecting 200 dollars. the whole thing understandably freaks her out, and after waking she feels determined to keep herself from falling asleep again.
by now john egbert has set himself up to be the server player for jade and begins to help her to set up her kernelsprite (9) for prototyping (10).
STILL WITH ME?
while attempting to prototype the kernelsprite everything promptly goes to shit and jade's dog becquerel ends up prototyping himself so he can save jade's island from destruction by giant flaming meteor. this prompts jack noir to further evolve with the power of the queen's ring, and he takes on the shape of becquerel's head, snout, and gains all of his powers. unbeknownst to all this, jade enters the medium (11), and promptly falls asleep again. dave strider takes over the role of her server player, and deploys equipment that was destroyed when she entered the medium.
from here, jade is introducing to alchemizing (12), and starts to interact more frequently with the trolls (13). shenanigans ensue. for example, tavros nitram attempts to hit on her by revealing that he accidentally killed her grandfather out of a gross cultural misunderstanding, and is subsequently friendzoned. she makes contact with karkat vantas too, and unknowingly helps him out with a couple of problems he had been having with his past and future selves (14). karkat brings her a message from her own future self during the conversation, which prompts jade to turn off the fourth wall (15) in her lab, and contain it in her pictionary modus (16).
from here, jade decides to prototype her half complete kernelsprite with her dead dreamself, resulting in the creation of jadesprite. jadesprite is unfortunately less then happy about being brought back to life so suddenly, and spends a lot of her time wailing, crying and screeching at jade, refusing to stop even when violently shaken and slapped. after basically abandoning her sprite as it had become useless, jade turns to kanaya maryam - the other hero of space - for some advice on what to do next.
kanaya explains jade's frog breeding duties to her, as each hero of space is required to take charge of the forge (17) in their corresponding session. frogs are very important to SBURB, and in order to proceed, jade must breed the genesis frog (18). breeding the frogs is a very time consuming process, and though jade knows she doesn't have a hope of obtaining the genesis frog in time due to their game session being doomed, she continues to fulfill her breeding duties regardless. dave eventually shows up to help her, and with his time traveling powers, they are able to speed up the process considerably, and stoke the forge.
jack noir then descends into their session, and attacked both jade and dave. jade is safe because the becquerel side of jack noir refuses to attack her, but dave is killed in the attack, but jade is able to revive his dreamself by giving his dead body a kiss. jack noir proceeds to follow jade around due to becquerel's feelings of loyalty for her.
jade strikes up a deal with her denizen (19), echidna, and prompts her to reveal the location of the last frog required to complete the genetic code of the genesis frog. to hold up her end of the bargain, she is tasked with finding a way to bring the four planets (20) of the kids into the medium with her when they finally escape the doomed session they are currently in.
in order to escape the doomed session, the kids need to activate the scratch, which is an event that essentially soft resets the universe it is activated in. in activating the scratch, jack is erased from their timeline, and their session would return to normal.
to prepare for this, jade allows herself to be killed so she can finally reach godtier (21), and become the witch of space. when a play finally ascends, their death usually causes their dreamself to waken. because jadesprite was essentially her dreamself at the time, jade fused with her. with an arsenal full of shiny new space powers, she shrinks the four planets of the medium, summons john egbert to her side, and boards a prospitian ship that she proceeds to enlarge and smash through the fourth wall.
the journey from the doomed session to the new, scratched session takes three long years: plenty of time for jade to get used to her new powers and also being part dog. she is due to spend these three years with john egbert, a host of consorts (22) and the three remaining sprites (23). through intermissions in act six we get to see her watching movies with john and having a well deserved break from saving the world.
(1) becquerel (n): jade's time vworping pet omnipoterrier. he lived on the pacific island that jade inhabits for millions of years before either her or her grandfather had been around; he is at least 413 million years old. he was created in a meteor lab using DNA coded from a notebook belonging to rose lalonde (see footnote #14), and an ordinary dog named halley. the first guardian of earth.
(2) SBURB (n); the world-destroying game jade john dave and rose begin to play together upon the thirteenth of april, 2009. apparently nobody tried to tell them this was a bad idea. contains two discs that allow each person to both play the game and act as a server player for somebody else.
(3) prospit (n); the kingdom of light. one of the two kingdoms found upon the dream plane, accessible when jade falls asleep. its opposite is the kingdom of derse, which it is locked in an seemingly eternal war with. it has a moon connected to it by a giant chain, and this is where jade harley and john egbert's dreamselves 'live'. jade is frequently 'awake' on prospit, while her friend john egbert remains 'asleep' in his own tower.
(4) jack noir (n); a bit of a badass. an agent of derse, who was forced to wear a silly hat by the queen of derse, got mad about it, killed her and took her ring and subsequently took the throne all in a couple of minutes.
(5) skaia (n); a world that the players have to build in order to win SBURB. a potential planet full of "unlimited creative potential". the core of skaia hosts the battlefield, where the war between the armies of prospit and derse takes place. it looks like a giant chessboard.
(6) the 'death' of jade: before his death, grandpa harley visited the kid's session using the portals in the frog temple on their island (see footnote #14), making him around before john entered the session, but gone by the time jade entered. he found the dead body of jade's dreamself, and had her stuffed and put into the attic, according to a family tradition.
(7) dreambot (n); a robot built for jade harley by her grandfather hass harley. it activates when its user is dreaming, takes her place in the real world while they she is on prospit and acts out whatever its dreamself is doing. when jade is asleep, the other kids are able to keep in touch with her via her dreambot.
(8) the furthest ring (n); not somewhere you would go for a picnic. described by feferi peixes as "the infinite space which divides all sessions, completely unnavigable and unfathomable, untouched by the time or space of any universe in existence". it is haunted by a number of eldritch horrorterrors. they are like those yucky balls of hair you pull out of the bottom of the shower drain, except a million times bigger.
(9) kernelsprite (n); playing SBURB requires the player to prototype a kernelsprite twice over to bring it to its final form, from which it can guide its player through the medium of SBURB. they also have functions important to the individual's session. objects prototyped into the kernelsprite early will alter the game session to reflect this. ergo, the ring that jack noir stole from the black queen gives him the appearance and abilities of the kernel.
(10) prototyping (v); to combine the base kernelsprite with an inanimate, living or dead organism. a kernelsprite can be prototyped twice, and what you prototype a kernelsprite affects its physical attributes.
(11) the medium (n); the medium surrounds skaia, and the object of SBURB is to reach the medium in order to access it.
(12) alchemizing (v); combining two objects together to make something entirely new. used in a sentence: edward elric tried to alchemize his dead mother a new body, but it didn't work out too well.
(13) the trolls (n); twelve alien kids from a different session to the human kids. they have already played SBURB before. each of the kids has a specific 'patron' troll who looks out for them and helps them out with the game. jade's patron troll is karkat vantas.
(14) weird time shit (n); homestuck is not a linear webcomic, and with the possibility of infinite sessions all running along different linear paths at the same time the chance of accidentally chatting up your past or future self is unfortunately high.
from (1), BECQUEREL; rose lalonde's notebook: a journal written by rose lalonde, stolen by dave strider, and then stolen again from him by draconian dignitary, a servant of derse. the notebook is entitled 'MEOW', and is filled with the letters from the word MEOW repeatedly. the repeated letters represent DNA nucleotides, and spells out the genetic code for creating becquerel.
(15) the fourth wall (n); exactly what it says on the tin. a window that the kids later use to bust out of their doomed session and into another one.
(16) fetch modus (n); each player has their own sylladex, a stylized hammer space where they can keep objects they pick up during their travels, no matter the size. the fetch modus details the way the artifacts fit into the sylladex. jade harley wields pictionary kind fetch modus, which requires her to draw the object she wishes to store in her sylladex.
(17) the forge (n); giant volcano. requires stoking from the player closest to it, which in the kids' session, happens to be jade harley.
(18) the genesis frog (n); a successful result of a lot of tiresome frog breeding. becomes the universe the players of SBURB create if they are successful. ribbit.
(19) denizen (n); NPCs found in SBURB sessions. each one guards a giant treasure pile that can be used to forge ultimate weapons, which is accessible upon their defeat. jade's denizen is echidna.
(20) planet (n); planets of the medium. there are four, one for each kid. jade's planet is called the land of frost and frogs.
(21) godtier (n); the highest power level to which a SBURB player can ascend. to become godtier, a player must be killed upon their quest bed, which resides in their own individual planet in the medium. from here they are resurrected as godtier, and gain a ton of sweet, sweet powers (and cute fuzzy dog ears).
(22) consorts (n); beings that inhabit the planets of the medium. different for each planet. blue salamanders inhabit jade's planet for example, while anxious pink turtles inhabit rose lalonde's.
(23) davesprite, jaspersprite and nannasprite (n); dave's, rose's and john's sprites respectively.
PERSONALITY:
jade harley is a pretty typical happy bubbly kid. she is super enthusiastic and cheerful, and always on the move. though she is not at all the youngest of her group of friends, she tends to act as though she is. she has a fascination for stuffed animals and loves to play with them, a childish forgetfulness to the point where she needs to wear colourful bands around her fingers so she won't forget anything important, and her fetch modus is pictionary kind, which requires her to draw an object before being able to capchalogue it. even the way she types reflects this, as she uses no punctuation, a lot of emoticons, and several exclamation points all at once whenever she gets particularly excited. in short, she acts like a giant dork because she is one. she likes to be silly, play around and have fun.
underneath all of that she is a deeply caring girl who has proven several times over that she will do absolutely anything to help out her friends. she is always there to assist other whenever she is needed, and is often very eager to get in on whatever the current plan is; she likes to take charge, and make sure that things get done and on time. despite her carefree and airy personality, she is ready to make any sacrifice that needs to be made in order to get the job done. for example, she pushes one of her best friends john out of the path of a meteor and takes the hit for her, sacrificing her dreamself in the process.
and she has an unshakable faith that makes her invaluable to the rest of the kids, and her ability to make friends with just about anybody is very admirable! she is automatically friendly to anybody she likes and even to people who are awful to her if she suspects that deep down they are really nice after all. this is shown in her many conversations with karkat as she refuses to let him walk all over her and instead prefers to get to the heart of all his problems and figure em out.
beyond her caring, affectionate side, jade is an incredibly intelligent girl. she often appears to be air-headed, but her interests and history debunk this pretty easily. she has a passion for nuclear physics and for botany, and she is constantly able to keep ahead of the rest of her friends in terms of technology, despite the fact that she lives on an abandoned island all by herself. she is also a skilled markswoman, and is proficient in the use of guns and firearms. however, she is a pacifist, and states very clearly in her introduction that she would never harm "an innocent creature, ANTHROPOMORPHICALLY PERSUADED OR OTHERWISE".
from a very young age she has had to deal with a considerable number of obstacles in her life. her grandfather died when she was very young, leaving her to share the island with nobody but her dog bequerel. this, in short, has made her a little crazy. she isn't used to the influence or presence of other humans, and frequently doesn't understand things that the other kids say to her. pop culture references fly right over her head. in addition to her strange and sometimes confusing demeanor, upon obtaining godtier and becoming part dog due to merging with jadesprite, she becomes far more doglike than she had been before. chasing cats is suddenly second nature. what is a sixteen year old to do?
dog shenanigans aside, jade is more than capable of standing up for herself. funnily enough she has a real no-nonsense attitude when it comes to people attempting to jerk her around or talk down to her, and quickly becomes fed-up with people she deems to be useless. karkat vantas and jadesprite are the two who have to endure the full brunt of her terrifying fury. she bosses the pair of them around, shouts at jadesprite for crying and hits her to try and make her stop, and spends a lot of time refusing to listen to karkat's ranting and raving. she sticks up for what she believes in, is quick to fly off the handle when something gets on her nerves, and doesn't stand for any kind of crap.
POWER:
witch of space powers and god tier: in her canon state, jade harley has reached a kind of immortality; she can only be killed if her death is judged to be heroic or just, otherwise she will simply revive. her god tier powers allow her super speed, strength, durability and stamina. she is able to manipulate space, reality and energy, can teleport herself and others any where she pleases (so long as it is close to the green sun, the source of most of her powers), and can shrink and enlarge any object or person if needed.
since this is all a little much (no kidding!), i'm keen to narrow it down to enlarging and shrinking, the ridiculous doggy dog traits because they are hilarious, and allowing her to fly.

the city is unlike anything she has ever experienced. she has read about buildings and skyscrapers; seen apartment complexes on the television; imagined a world paved with concrete and tiny plants poking up from the earth between the cracks. the city is parking lots and thousands of people. almost too many people. on the first day she walks around her block and then returns quickly home to hide in her room, missing becquerel and staring at her toes. there is dirt under her nails, and dirt feels out of place here.
a new start for a new location, perhaps. jade stares at herself in the mirror for a long time, and then takes a pair of scissors and cuts her hair short. not too short, but back from its tangled, matted length until it just reaches her hips, and then she brushes it out until her wrists hurt and her hair is shiny and new and jagged along the edges.
the territory she is used to now is completely changed and unfamiliar, far from her home on the island and just as far from the confines of the ship: wide open spaces stretch on for miles and every sniff she takes is still new. now she has been here a week and cannot stop exploring. adventure has been the name of jade's game ever since she started playing it, and she doesn't spare any more time than a couple of minutes lazing around idly at home. there are things to do, and people to meet! there are old friends to reconnect with, though for the moment, she prefers the alone time and the space away from her brother.
perhaps tomorrow she will start to look for them again. she has fended for herself all her life, and finds she can't stand one minute more of it. another venture, this time deeper, to find anybody else who lives here alone.

(13) the trolls (n); twelve alien kids from a different session to the human kids. they have already played SBURB before. each of the kids has a specific 'patron' troll who looks out for them and helps them out with the game. jade's patron troll is karkat vantas.
(14) weird time shit (n); homestuck is not a linear webcomic, and with the possibility of infinite sessions all running along different linear paths at the same time the chance of accidentally chatting up your past or future self is unfortunately high.
from (1), BECQUEREL; rose lalonde's notebook: a journal written by rose lalonde, stolen by dave strider, and then stolen again from him by draconian dignitary, a servant of derse. the notebook is entitled 'MEOW', and is filled with the letters from the word MEOW repeatedly. the repeated letters represent DNA nucleotides, and spells out the genetic code for creating becquerel.
(15) the fourth wall (n); exactly what it says on the tin. a window that the kids later use to bust out of their doomed session and into another one.
(16) fetch modus (n); each player has their own sylladex, a stylized hammer space where they can keep objects they pick up during their travels, no matter the size. the fetch modus details the way the artifacts fit into the sylladex. jade harley wields pictionary kind fetch modus, which requires her to draw the object she wishes to store in her sylladex.
(17) the forge (n); giant volcano. requires stoking from the player closest to it, which in the kids' session, happens to be jade harley.
(18) the genesis frog (n); a successful result of a lot of tiresome frog breeding. becomes the universe the players of SBURB create if they are successful. ribbit.
(19) denizen (n); NPCs found in SBURB sessions. each one guards a giant treasure pile that can be used to forge ultimate weapons, which is accessible upon their defeat. jade's denizen is echidna.
(20) planet (n); planets of the medium. there are four, one for each kid. jade's planet is called the land of frost and frogs.
(21) godtier (n); the highest power level to which a SBURB player can ascend. to become godtier, a player must be killed upon their quest bed, which resides in their own individual planet in the medium. from here they are resurrected as godtier, and gain a ton of sweet, sweet powers (and cute fuzzy dog ears).
(22) consorts (n); beings that inhabit the planets of the medium. different for each planet. blue salamanders inhabit jade's planet for example, while anxious pink turtles inhabit rose lalonde's.
(23) davesprite, jaspersprite and nannasprite (n); dave's, rose's and john's sprites respectively.
PERSONALITY:
jade harley is a pretty typical happy bubbly kid. she is super enthusiastic and cheerful, and always on the move. though she is not at all the youngest of her group of friends, she tends to act as though she is. she has a fascination for stuffed animals and loves to play with them, a childish forgetfulness to the point where she needs to wear colourful bands around her fingers so she won't forget anything important, and her fetch modus is pictionary kind, which requires her to draw an object before being able to capchalogue it. even the way she types reflects this, as she uses no punctuation, a lot of emoticons, and several exclamation points all at once whenever she gets particularly excited. in short, she acts like a giant dork because she is one. she likes to be silly, play around and have fun.
underneath all of that she is a deeply caring girl who has proven several times over that she will do absolutely anything to help out her friends. she is always there to assist other whenever she is needed, and is often very eager to get in on whatever the current plan is; she likes to take charge, and make sure that things get done and on time. despite her carefree and airy personality, she is ready to make any sacrifice that needs to be made in order to get the job done. for example, she pushes one of her best friends john out of the path of a meteor and takes the hit for her, sacrificing her dreamself in the process.
and she has an unshakable faith that makes her invaluable to the rest of the kids, and her ability to make friends with just about anybody is very admirable! she is automatically friendly to anybody she likes and even to people who are awful to her if she suspects that deep down they are really nice after all. this is shown in her many conversations with karkat as she refuses to let him walk all over her and instead prefers to get to the heart of all his problems and figure em out.
beyond her caring, affectionate side, jade is an incredibly intelligent girl. she often appears to be air-headed, but her interests and history debunk this pretty easily. she has a passion for nuclear physics and for botany, and she is constantly able to keep ahead of the rest of her friends in terms of technology, despite the fact that she lives on an abandoned island all by herself. she is also a skilled markswoman, and is proficient in the use of guns and firearms. however, she is a pacifist, and states very clearly in her introduction that she would never harm "an innocent creature, ANTHROPOMORPHICALLY PERSUADED OR OTHERWISE".
from a very young age she has had to deal with a considerable number of obstacles in her life. her grandfather died when she was very young, leaving her to share the island with nobody but her dog bequerel. this, in short, has made her a little crazy. she isn't used to the influence or presence of other humans, and frequently doesn't understand things that the other kids say to her. pop culture references fly right over her head. in addition to her strange and sometimes confusing demeanor, upon obtaining godtier and becoming part dog due to merging with jadesprite, she becomes far more doglike than she had been before. chasing cats is suddenly second nature. what is a sixteen year old to do?
dog shenanigans aside, jade is more than capable of standing up for herself. funnily enough she has a real no-nonsense attitude when it comes to people attempting to jerk her around or talk down to her, and quickly becomes fed-up with people she deems to be useless. karkat vantas and jadesprite are the two who have to endure the full brunt of her terrifying fury. she bosses the pair of them around, shouts at jadesprite for crying and hits her to try and make her stop, and spends a lot of time refusing to listen to karkat's ranting and raving. she sticks up for what she believes in, is quick to fly off the handle when something gets on her nerves, and doesn't stand for any kind of crap.
POWER:
witch of space powers and god tier: in her canon state, jade harley has reached a kind of immortality; she can only be killed if her death is judged to be heroic or just, otherwise she will simply revive. her god tier powers allow her super speed, strength, durability and stamina. she is able to manipulate space, reality and energy, can teleport herself and others any where she pleases (so long as it is close to the green sun, the source of most of her powers), and can shrink and enlarge any object or person if needed.
since this is all a little much (no kidding!), i'm keen to narrow it down to enlarging and shrinking, the ridiculous doggy dog traits because they are hilarious, and allowing her to fly.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
the city is unlike anything she has ever experienced. she has read about buildings and skyscrapers; seen apartment complexes on the television; imagined a world paved with concrete and tiny plants poking up from the earth between the cracks. the city is parking lots and thousands of people. almost too many people. on the first day she walks around her block and then returns quickly home to hide in her room, missing becquerel and staring at her toes. there is dirt under her nails, and dirt feels out of place here.
a new start for a new location, perhaps. jade stares at herself in the mirror for a long time, and then takes a pair of scissors and cuts her hair short. not too short, but back from its tangled, matted length until it just reaches her hips, and then she brushes it out until her wrists hurt and her hair is shiny and new and jagged along the edges.
the territory she is used to now is completely changed and unfamiliar, far from her home on the island and just as far from the confines of the ship: wide open spaces stretch on for miles and every sniff she takes is still new. now she has been here a week and cannot stop exploring. adventure has been the name of jade's game ever since she started playing it, and she doesn't spare any more time than a couple of minutes lazing around idly at home. there are things to do, and people to meet! there are old friends to reconnect with, though for the moment, she prefers the alone time and the space away from her brother.
perhaps tomorrow she will start to look for them again. she has fended for herself all her life, and finds she can't stand one minute more of it. another venture, this time deeper, to find anybody else who lives here alone.
